چکیده

Group-housed laboratory mice are frequently found with their whiskers and facial hair removed. It has been proposed that dominant mice are responsible for barbering the hair of the recipient (the Dalila effect), and early studies suggest that the hair is removed by nibbling. In the present study, pairs of C57BL6 mice, composed of a barber and recipient, were separated to allow hair to regrow. The animals were then placed together in an observation box and their social behavior was videorecorded. The videorecording was subjected to frame-by-frame analysis. Barbering was found to occur during acts of mutual grooming. During grooming, one member of a mouse pair removed the vibrissae of the conspecific and did so by grasping individual whiskers with the incisors and plucking them out. Although plucking appeared 'painful', recipients were passive in accepting barbering, and even pursued conspecifics for further grooming. Other measures indicated that barbers were heavier than recipients and brain weights were not different. Although cortical barrel fields appeared normal to cytochrome oxidization and zinc staining, Golgi analysis of layer three, barrel-field basilar dendrites indicated changes in cell morphology. The results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that barbering is an expression of social dominance, the origins of the barbering behavior, and the consequences of barbering on brain function.

The growth of rats and mice vibrissae under normal and some abnormal conditions.

The growth of hair from the mystacial vibrissal follicles of C3H mice and Wistar rats has been measured for up to seven cycles. Normally growth in length and thickness was regular and little affected by age or sex. Plucking vibrissae at any stage during the growing period was followed by the appearance of a new vibrissa 8-11 days later. Plucking when growth had ceased had no effect on the time ...

Whisker plucking alters responses of rat trigeminal ganglion neurons.

Whisker plucking in developing and adult rats provides a convenient method of temporarily altering tactile input for the purposes of studying experience-dependent plasticity in the somatosensory cortex. Yet, a comprehensive examination of the effect of whisker plucking on the response properties of whisker follicle-innervating trigeminal ganglion (NVg) neurons is lacking. We used extracellular ...

تاثیر ویتامین D3 در جلوگیری از پیشرفت بیماری انسفالومیلیت خود ایمن تجربی در موشهای نژاد C57BL/6

Background & Aim: Multiple sclerosis(MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology affecting the central nervous system. The prevalence of MS is the highest where environmental supply of vitamin D is low. Some studies have shown a strong protective effect of vitamin D3 on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis(EAE) of MS model, but it is not known how it affects EAE. Vitamin D3...

Rapid, experience-dependent changes in levels of synaptic zinc in primary somatosensory cortex of the adult mouse.

Electrophysiological studies have established that the adult cerebral cortex undergoes immediate functional reorganizations after perturbations of the sensory periphery. These activity-dependent modifications are thought to be mediated via the rapid regulation of the synaptic strength of existing connections. Recent studies have implicated synaptic zinc as contributing to activity-dependent mec...

Comparing the effect of high intensity interval training and continuous training on BDNF, GDNF and NGF in hippocampus of C57BL/6 male mice

Introduction: Identifying the factors that influence on the uptake of Neurotrophins is an important goal for brain's health and function. There is some evidence that long-term exercise improves brain function. However, the effects of exercise intensities on the brain remain is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of high intensity interval (HIIT) and continuo...
